Thanks for the response, the question made me think echo meant something else (when you start out and know nothing your understanding is constantly challenged on the web) but your answer has cleared the confusion for me ;0)

I think I never answered this because I wasn’t sure exactly what you meant. You don’t output “straight PHP”. You either echo something or you exit out of PHP using a closing brace (?>), put your output, and then re-open the PHP (

There’s some personal preference mixed in as well. You’ll draw the line on when you choose one option over the other.

Is there some sort of convention or reason why people are using straight PHP code in the widget output rather than echoing everything out? I had a habit of echoing everything and in learning WordPress widget development, I realized everyone was just output the raw PHP. Is this the best practice for widget and plugin development?
